I watched your interview with mommyramblings the other night. I was very touched by your message of hope and your legislative success for justice for all victims of violence. Your journey, not chosen by you, teaching others about your daughter is nothing but extraordinary.
Strength and wisdom from your heart comfort those in need of healing. Thank you for sharing Joan’s story.
May out merciful God in heaven bless you, your family and your work.

I came about learning of Joan and what she had gone through as well as the case and her legacy from John Douglas’ book “The Killer Across the Table”. As a father of 3 children (2 girls and 1 boy, 17, 11, and 9), the story brought me to tears. I had to stop multiple times to collect myself and dry my eyes. Originally, I wanted to read the book out of a sense of research and understanding of the criminal mind, but then I decided to read it and write about it for my Sociology 150 class which I’m taking on my journey to become a family therapist with aspirations of getting my doctorate (after having gone back to school late in life, 37). I feel the story of Joan and everything in John Douglas’ books will help me to become the kind of therapist who can help a child with problems before they grow into a monster like McGowan and help families like Joan’s recover. As a father and a human being, I hope more laws are instituted to support victims. And as a former Cub Scout Cub Master, I hope that more guidelines are instituted in both the BSA and the GSUSA to keep such devastating crimes like this from occurring again.
